scene 1 will be edited as a non-continuity styled montage sequence, its function in the narrative is to introduce the audience to the character and his lifestyle. The montage will follow the character as he gets ready for school and returns back home, it has to be a montage because i will use it to manipulate how time flows in the scene. Condensing 2-3 days worth of his lifestyle into a smaller timeframe, I also want this montage to create an emotional bond between the audience and the character. Watching him live out the same life on a continuous loop will create the same fed up feeling the character is experiencing, not enough to impact the viewing experience but enough that the audience can empathise.
The second scene is where we see the character attempts to change his attitude and his daily routine, and as such this will have a slightly slower editing pace. Going back to continuity style editing, using match on actions and steadier camera work to symbolises him brining stability back into his life. My editing for this scene will have a much more light-hearted tone than previously. Like in all horror movies, there is always a deceptively serene set up for the narrative, and after scene 1 has introduced a much darker side of the story this will be necessary to meet the audiences expectations for the conventions of a genre they enjoy.
scene 3 will eventually turn into another montage, taking the audience alongside the character as he happily carries out his volunteering tasks throughout the cemetery. This montage will also be used to manipulate time, but the edits will not be at the same tempo as the first, carrying on the same happy tone as the second scene. The end of scene 3 is where the montage ends, the discovery he makes requires a change in tone, and the abrupt end of the montage will help the audience understand just how jarring this discovery is to him.
And with that second change in tone, the horror genre truly begins to show. Making use of more shot-reverse shots (aligning the camera to match the eyeline of the actor to make it an accurate point of view) to put the audience in the place of the character, scene 4 will be edited to represent the sinister side of the narrative. This will also use match cuts and possibly a jump cut, creating enough stability to immerse the audience, but enough disruption to set a tense atmosphere
scene 5 is the finale of the film, therefore the editing has to represent this. Cutting to an extreme close up of the characters scared eyes and cutting to black, using the sudden gunshot sound as a sort of sound bridge or audio match to introduce the final credits. This sound will also frighten the audience for the first time, while they know the character has likely been shot. This scene has been edited in such a way that they never see who the murderer is, creating a suspenseful open ending.
